11:11p This caught me completely off guard. But, we might finally have some experience in the back-end of the bullpen.
The Brewers acquired Francisco Rodriguez from the Mets for two players to be named later and/or cash considerations. Who the two players to be named will be, if any, I’m not sure, but I’m guessing some guys from the Minors.
But seriously, this is a gigantic move for the Brewers. I didn’t see it coming at all, but GM Doug Melvin was bound to make a huge move at some point, and this could be it.
Now, there’s only one dilemma- Rodriguez still wants to be a closer. We already have an established closer in John Axford, so this could create a problem. For now, we have two closers, unless one becomes a setup man.
So let’s look at the numbers and compare Rodriguez and Axford. Here are Rodriguez’s numbers so far in 2011: 2-2, 3.16 ERA, 23 saves in 26 opportunities in 42 2/3 innings pitched. Now Axford: 2-2, 2.83 ERA, 23 saves in 25 opportunities in 41 1/3 innings pitched. Pretty similar numbers.
They are two very different pitchers, however. Rodriguez is known for his deceptive change up, while Axford his known for his high heater.
Anyway, I’ll post more info tomorrow. I still don’t know everything about this trade, but I should by tomorrow.
